[float=left][/float]Come with us as we take a stroll around Chautauqua Institution in the winter.
Although the 781-acre Chautauqua Institution on the shores of Chautauqua Lake is essentially a summer community, the Institution welcomes guests year-round. The 134-year-old Institution is a national historic district that is known for its artsy, intellectual summers.

When the season of summer concerts, theater, classes and lectures ends, they don't just close the gates. In the winter, the community resembles an old-fashioned Christmas card. There's a quiet, contemplative ambiance to Chautauqua during the off-season. Approximately 7,500 people live on the grounds during the summer season. That number drops to about 400 during the winter.

The area benefits from usually bountiful lake-effect snowstorms fueled by winds off Lake Erie which forms the northwestern border of the county. Cross-country skiing is popular on the grounds, the golf course and the frozen lake.

This is truly a winter wonderland and so very different.

Quite and very still compared to all the Summer activities, not even the low drone of a motorboat on the lake. Magnificant in its quality, it is a time to reflect on all the Operas, Concerts, Lectures, and Religious Insights that eminate from this community.

Let us start out across Bestor Plaza and walk through some snow as we head towards the Chautauqua Bookstore located below the Postoffice. The Bookstore is open year round with different operating hours In-Season, Out-Season.

Yes this is a different place now
but still very quaint and familiar.

Statuesque
and waiting.

Snow and....
Gingerbread!.

Oh, what fun it is!

If you visit on the weekend take a sleigh ride through the Institution Grounds

During the months of January and February sleigh rides are offered and you may puchase tickets at the Bookstore.

An experience you will treasure, Sleighs and the charm that is Chautauqua.

Don't believe there will be
 a concert tonight

And if we get too chilly,
we can always return home
but still enjoy a virtual visit to Bestor Plaza day or night
with the Bestor WebCam
