Birds may have been bred for fighting

Police seized more than 20 birds and about 40 cages from what they say appears to be an illegal rooming house on East Union Street Saturday night. The animals may be part of a larger bird-fighting ring, said Sgt. Greg Fawkes.

"My sense now from going there is they could be storing some birds there and going somewhere else," he said. "They are probably taking them to another location for a large fight."

Ashland Police, along with officials from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Animal Rescue League of Boston and a Portuguese translator from the Holliston Police Department, executed a search warrant at the home Saturday at about 10:30 p.m., said Police Chief Scott Rohmer.
